Fragrance of Roses: short miraculous experiences by Sahaja Yogis

These stories are from The Breeze of Sahasrara, the book Shri Mataji asked me to compile about Sahaja miracles. These particular experiences relate to the sense of smell.

Smell

Chris Marlow shared an experience that occurred multiple times:

"My friend and I had been out for a pizza in London and were walking home. Suddenly, we were struck by an incredible smell of roses—very powerful and unmistakable. We looked around to see where it was coming from, but it wasn’t coming from anywhere obvious. Then we realized we were standing outside Darwin Court in North London. Shri Mataji was staying there at the time. I told my friend it was a well-known phenomenon that Shri Mataji’s presence is often accompanied by the fragrance of roses."

Pamela Bromley, one of the first Sahaja Yogis in Brighton, England, recalled:

"In the early 1980s, I was on my way to a Sahaja Yoga meeting in Brighton. As I was driving near the venue, the fragrance of roses became incredibly strong, even though there were no roses anywhere nearby. Shri Mataji was clearly present."

Paulette Oddo of France shared the following:

"After my divorce, I had fallen into a state of total exhaustion and acute mental anguish. But one morning, I woke with a premonition that something good would happen. I felt an overwhelming desire to go to Chartres Cathedral to see the Virgin Mary. As I prayed before the statue of the Virgin, I suddenly smelled a strong rose perfume. The scent followed me as I walked around the cathedral and was still present when I left.

Outside, I saw an Indian lady getting out of a car. She looked at me and smiled. I asked someone nearby who she was.

‘You don’t know her? Why are you standing here?’ the man asked.

‘Because there is such a beautiful scent,’ I replied. ‘Roses. Can’t you smell them?’

‘It’s Shri Mataji,’ he said. ‘She is here for truth and can protect thousands of people.’

I felt an explosion of joy within myself. I already knew this lady was very great—and this, I realized, was what I had been waiting for."

Purna Vertunni of Italy had two extraordinary experiences in her teenage years, both accompanied by the scent of roses:

"There was a period in my life filled with many problems. We were living near the sea, and one day I went into the water. Suddenly, the sea started pulling me out, and I felt I was drowning. At that moment, I realized the sea was Shri Vishnu, and He couldn’t let me die because He was my spiritual grandfather. Then I felt a hand taking mine and pulling me out. I could smell that beautiful fragrance of Shri Mataji—just like roses.

On another occasion, while I was attending art school, things were very difficult. The school was full of strange and disturbing energy. I prayed to Shri Mataji in my heart, asking Her to protect me and guide me through it. Suddenly, I again smelled that very strong, distinctive rose fragrance of Shri Mataji. I saw Shri Ganesha walking with me, His arm around my shoulders. He said, 'Don’t worry, I will always be with you.' From that moment on, I felt completely protected—nothing could touch me in that place."

Brigitte Saugstad of Austria shared this memory:

"In October 1987, Shri Mataji visited our ashram in Vienna. We ladies offered Her some rose-oil perfume. She applied a little on the back of Her hand and then told us all to smell the backs of our own hands. To our amazement and delight, we could clearly smell the perfume coming from our skin."

Sri Baba Mama brother of Shree Mataji, "My Memoirs"

An Extract from the book written by Sri Baba Mama brother of Shree Mataji, "My Memoirs" :  In August 1942, my father was in jail and the family was under financial stress. At such a juncture, Shri Mataji, who was studying in the Science College, decided to stop Her college on the 15th of August, our Independence Day, by picketing in front of the gate. My mother, though very conservative, did not object to Her political activity. As a protest, Shri Mataji decided to picket in front of Her college and stop all the students who were trying to enter.  The Principal of the college was a good friend of the family, but he got orders from the British authorities to rusticate anybody who picketed or disobeyed the college rules. Mr. Krishnamurti, who was vice principal, was asked to go and persuade Shri Mataji to stop and to say that if She did not stop picketing, She would be given a college-leaving certificate. In those days, rustication meant that you could not seek admission i...

Gagangiri Maharaj and his meeting with Shri Mataji

Interesting story about the importance of foot soak

*Interesting story about the importance of foot soak* *Walking in the streets of Rome (Recollections - Volume 2)* In 1982 Shri Mataji went to Rome to hold some public meetings, and I decided I would jump on a train and travel from London to help. It so happened that I was the only English person to go and I was very blessed and honoured to be invited to stay in the very same flat as Shri Mataji, and on several occasions we went shopping for marble and pictures etc. On one occasion whilst walking through the cobbled streets of Rome Shri Mataji’s steps became very laboured, as though She was dragging a heavy weight. We wondered what could be the cause of this obvious discomfort to our Holy Mother.  She explained that there were hundreds of souls hanging onto Her legs begging for redemption. She also told us that it is for this same reason that we the Sahaja Yogis feel heavy at the end of the day. When we go out in our daily lives many souls who are unable to take a birth (they are st...
