Mr Avdhut Pai’s Sahaji’s stories with Shri Mataji in 70s 80s at Eric Dada’s house
1. The Hatha Yogi from the Himalayas (1973-74)
-
Context: Public programs were held every day in Bombay at a hall in BTI Vidya Bhavan. Shri Mataji would speak, and seekers were given realization.
-
Incident:
-
A sadhu with a big beard and long hair attended a program but refused realization when asked.
-
At the end of the session, as Shri Mataji was about to leave, the sadhu suddenly came forward and fell at Her Feet like a “coconut tree.”
-
Shri Mataji held his head with Her thumb to prevent him from falling. The sadhu exclaimed loudly, “Ma!” and sighed deeply with relief.
-
-
Explanation by Shri Mataji:
-
He was a Hatha Yogi from the Himalayas. Such yogis raise their Kundalini only up to the Agnya chakra, which is extremely painful, “like a thousand bees stinging at the same time.”
-
Only the Adi Shakti or Her children can give full realization. When Shri Mataji put Her hand on his Sahasrara, the Kundalini rose fully, and he got his realization.
-
Shri Mataji added: “You feel only a little on the chakras because My protection is always there on you whenever you give realization.”
-
2. The Smoking Habit and Shri Mataji’s Compassion (1976–79)
-
Background:
-
Even after realization, Avdhut Pai occasionally smoked during picnics (2–3 cigarettes in a year).
-
-
First Incident:
-
After a Puja on 6th February 1976, when he went to bow at Shri Mataji’s Feet, She asked, “How did you smoke?”
-
He was shocked because nobody had seen him.
-
-
Second Incident:
-
In 1979 at Dhulia, while helping during a Puja, he confessed publicly that he had smoked. Shri Mataji appreciated his honesty.
-
Later that day, while outside during a public program, he smelled strong cigarette odor coming from his own fingers—even though he had not smoked.
-
He tried washing his hands repeatedly, but the smell persisted for a long time. Finally, he told Shri Mataji.
-
-
The Miracle:
-
Shri Mataji held his fingers for 2–3 minutes and said: “Now see.” The smell disappeared completely.
-
She explained: “Because you accepted in the morning that you smoked, I have taken out all that smoke from your body and also from your karma. Now you can truly say you have never smoked.”
-
-
Medical Confirmation:
-
Later, during a Doppler test abroad, doctors said his brain and lungs were “clear” and that he had “never smoked in life.”
-
3. Shri Mataji Clearing Physical Problems
-
Incident:
-
In 1978–79, while living in the same flat as Shri Mataji, Avdhut Pai had a severe headache after being in the sun.
-
Shri Mataji immediately understood and told him: “Put your hand on My liver.”
-
After a few minutes, he felt the urge to vomit and had diarrhea, expelling everything. When he returned, the headache was completely gone.
-
Shri Mataji asked: “How are you feeling?” He replied: “Very fine.”
-
-
Lesson:
-
Shri Mataji not only clears spiritual problems but also physical imbalances, sometimes by absorbing negativity through Her body.
-
4. Cleansing at Marve Beach (Aadya Day)
-
Context: On an auspicious day, Sahaja Yogis gathered with Shri Mataji at Marve Beach near Bombay.
-
Event:
-
After Puja, Shri Mataji asked everyone to stand in a circle. She worked on each person, removing negativity and throwing it into the wet sand.
-
Shri Mataji said: “The wet sand on the seashore is the best element to absorb all your negative things.”
-
-
Tip from Shri Mataji:
-
She recommended sitting on the ground in Ganapatipule with legs open and hands behind to let the earth element absorb problems in the Mooladhara.
-
5. Shri Mataji Reading Thoughts
-
Incident at Rahuri:
-
During lunch, Avdhut Pai sat near Shri Mataji. He loved chapatis with butter, but normally got plain chapatis. Shri Mataji suddenly gave him a buttered chapati and said:
“I know you like it.” -
He was surprised because he had only thought about it.
-
6. The Sweater Story (Delhi, 1979)
-
Incident:
-
Avdhut Pai’s earthly mother asked him to buy a sweater from Delhi. He requested a fellow Sahaja Yogi (Mr. Verma) to help.
-
Later, Verma said: “Mother liked it very much.” He meant Shri Mataji, not Avdhut’s mother!
-
Shri Mataji Herself had asked him to buy a sweater for Avdhut Pai because He didn’t bring any gift for Her, being a student.
Story 1: Sleeping in Shri Mataji’s Room
-
The narrator had a thought that the person sleeping in Shri Mataji’s room was very lucky.
-
That thought reached Shri Mataji, and she made arrangements so he could sleep in the same room.
-
He ended up sleeping on the floor near the toilet door, and Shri Mataji accidentally touched him when going to the toilet at night.
-
Later, Shri Mataji said: “Because of that thought, I brought you here to sleep.”
-
The lesson: Shri Mataji could perceive pure thoughts and make them happen.
Story 2: The Milk Strike and the Tea
-
During a major milk strike in Bombay, there was no milk available in the city.
-
Despite the scarcity, Shri Mataji managed to get a small cup of tea and shared it with the narrator by pouring half into a saucer for him.
-
This gesture deeply touched him, showing Shri Mataji’s caring nature.
Story 3: Advice on Judo
-
The narrator told Shri Mataji about his interest in Judo.
-
Shri Mataji advised against it, saying martial arts like Judo and Karate are not good for the chakras.
-
She even said to throw away the Judo kimono (though the narrator sold it instead).
Story 4: Shri Mataji’s Guidance on Sun Protection
-
Once, while meeting Shri Mataji in a lift, she asked him to touch his head.
-
When he felt heat, Shri Mataji advised him always to wear a hat when in the sun.
-
This showed her concern for even small details of seekers’ well-being.
Story 5: The Singer and Mujra Incident
-
Shri Mataji was invited to a program where a singer performed.
-
The singer unknowingly sang a mujra song, traditionally linked to courtesans, in front of Shri Mataji.
-
Later, Shri Mataji’s feet became extremely hot. When asked why, she explained:
“All the deities within me got very angry because mujra is not to be sung before the Goddess.” -
The narrator massaged her feet with tears in his eyes, feeling guilty for inviting her.
-
Shri Mataji consoled him with love, saying he didn’t know and now he had learned.
Story 6: The Civil Engineer and the Ego
-
A civil engineer from the US gave a visiting card mentioning charges for realization and vibrations ($1 and $2).
-
He later said to Shri Mataji: “It’s easier to call Indira Gandhi than to call you.” (Indira Gandhi was PM then.)
-
Others were shocked, and Modi Uncle threatened him to leave.
-
The man left angrily, went to Orissa jungles, met yogis who told him to apologize to Shri Mataji for insulting Adi Shakti.
-
He tried multiple times to meet Shri Mataji again, but it never happened because, as Shri Mataji said:
“He has insulted me. Hanumana will see that he never comes in front of me.”
Story 1: First Visit to Eric Dada’s House
Avdhut Pai recalls his first visit to Eric Dada’s house in the early days of Sahaja Yoga. It was a small gathering of seekers. Shri Mataji was sitting simply, radiating love and peace. There was no formal setup—just Mother explaining the basics of meditation and giving Realization.
Story 2: Shri Mataji Cooking for Everyone
He shares how Shri Mataji would personally cook for the yogis after programs. Despite being the Adi Shakti, She served with complete humility, preparing meals and making sure everyone was comfortable. This left a deep impression on everyone about Her motherly nature.
Story 3: Explaining the Subtle System
In another meeting, Shri Mataji explained the subtle system in great detail. She spoke about the chakras, nadis, and Kundalini, making it simple and practical for newcomers to understand. Her knowledge was vast, yet She made it easy for everyone.
Story 4: Correcting Misunderstandings
At one gathering, someone had misconceptions about Sahaja Yoga. Shri Mataji very patiently clarified everything, using examples and humor. She explained how Sahaja Yoga is natural and spontaneous, not a ritual or dogma.
Story 5: Attention and Vibrations
Avdhut Pai narrates an incident where Shri Mataji asked seekers to feel vibrations on their hands. She guided everyone to keep their attention on the Sahasrara. This was the first time many people felt the cool breeze, a life-changing moment for them.
Story 6: Early Collective Feeling
He remembers the warmth and collective spirit during those early years. After meditation, they would all sit together, share food, and sing bhajans. Shri Mataji encouraged simplicity and love among all.
tory 1: Public Program and Shri Mataji’s Chakras
In public programs, Shri Mataji would work on her chakras to cleanse people. Once, in Gita Mandir Hall, I was sitting near her for a tape recording session. We had big 6-inch spool tape recorders with 14 hours of recording on four tracks, and we had recordings from 1970 to 1973. In 1984, Shri Mataji instructed us to send all these recordings—36 spools in total—to the UK.
During one session, Shri Mataji suddenly asked me to put my hand on her back chakra. As I placed my hand, it started working intensely, and the vibrations became so strong that it was difficult to keep my hand steady. This showed how powerfully she worked even in public programs.
Story 2: Shri Mataji and the Collective
Once in Rahuri, there were only four of us with Shri Mataji. Some sisters were staying 25–30 km away, and Shri Mataji asked the organizer to bring them. He refused, citing lack of facilities. Later, we learned those sisters had prepared everything, expecting Shri Mataji to visit them for Puja. Physically, Shri Mataji was with us, but actually, she was with the collective. It was a big lesson: she always prioritizes the collective, not individuals.
Story 3: Foresight About Marriages and Ganapatipule
Shri Mataji had tremendous foresight. She spoke about Sahaja marriages years before the first one in 1978. From 1974–75, she said Sahaja Yogis should marry each other, even across countries—which seemed difficult then, but it happened.
Similarly, Ganapatipule started in December 1985, yet she spoke about it four to five years earlier, saying we must go there. She also said in Diwali Puja 2003 (Los Angeles) that Sahaja Yogis have a high destiny and should not worry about small issues like jobs because destiny will work out everything. She said, “I’m telling you this today; when it happens, you will remember.”
Story 4: Advice During Uncertain Times
In 1996, someone asked Shri Mataji what would happen to the world amid global tensions. She said we must become very strong and meditate deeply. Meditation is the key in difficult times.
Story 5: Shri Mataji’s Help at Mother’s Death
In 1983–84, my mother was about 56 years old. During a tour in 1983, Shri Mataji told her not to come. In 1984, during Shivaratri Puja, Shri Mataji again warned her not to come in front of her. My mother disobeyed and came during the Haldi ritual. Shri Mataji became very angry and sent her away. My mother felt deeply hurt.
In March 1984, my sister invited both parents to the UK. When I asked Shri Mataji, she suddenly said, “Your mother is sick.” She was fine then. But by April 6, she fell ill with heart issues. On May 14, she seemed better, but that night Shri Mataji came in her dream as Lakshmi and told her to put all her worries at Her feet. This happened two nights in a row. On the third night, my mother passed away peacefully. Later, Shri Mataji explained that sudden deaths often leave desires unfulfilled, and She wanted to clear those worries for her.
Story 6: Father’s Will and Shri Mataji’s Intervention
My father passed away in May 1994. Before that, in February, he made a will, donating everything—books, tapes, copper pots, money, shares, and even his Bombay flat—to Sahaja Yoga for construction work. He left nothing for us, saying, “Shri Mataji will always give you what you need.”
After his death, the Bombay leader who was executor of the will did nothing for five years. In 1999, I went to Shri Mataji, crying. She said, “He wanted to take the flat for himself.” She replaced him and appointed Mr. Har Jalan as executor. I still have the original letter signed by Shri Mataji. Eventually, the flat was transferred to Sahaja Yoga, becoming the first official place in Bombay. When Shri Mataji heard the will, She said very few people not only keep money for Sahaja Yoga but actually grow it—and your father was one of them.
